How the Success Index (Canada) works

The Canada Success Index currently covers Ontario and British Columbia, the two provinces that publish school-level data in open formats. Ontario schools are scored on EQAO results (Grade 3, Grade 6, Grade 9 mathematics and the Grade 10 literacy test) and the Ministry's school demographics; British Columbia schools on Foundation Skills Assessment scale scores in literacy and numeracy. Every component is a percentile within the same province and school level, so an elementary school in Ontario is compared only with other Ontario elementary schools.

Frequently asked questions

How are Canadian schools ranked on this site?

Ontario schools receive a Success Index from EQAO results (Grades 3, 6, 9 and the OSSLT) and Ministry demographics; British Columbia schools from Foundation Skills Assessment literacy and numeracy results. Components are percentiles within the same province and school level, so rankings are comparable within a province.

Why only Ontario and British Columbia?

They are the provinces that publish school-level assessment results and school directories as open data. Other provinces will be added as comparable open data becomes available.

Does a high ranking mean a school is better?

It means the school's published assessment results and intake measures are strong. Visit the schools on your shortlist and ask how they support students at your child's level.
