How the Success Index (England) works

The England Success Index is built from the Department for Education's school performance tables and the Get Information About Schools register. Primary schools are scored on Key Stage 2 attainment and progress; secondary schools on Progress 8, Attainment 8, grade 5+ in English and maths and, where they have a sixth form, A level points. Every school's component is a percentile against schools of the same phase in England, and the share of pupils eligible for free school meals is included as a measure of community advantage.

Frequently asked questions

How are schools in England ranked on this site?

Every school receives a Success Index built from the Department for Education's performance tables: Key Stage 2 attainment and progress for primaries; Progress 8, Attainment 8, grade 5+ in English and maths and A level points for secondaries; plus the share of pupils on free school meals as a measure of community advantage. Components are percentiles within the same phase, so primaries are compared only with primaries.

What is Progress 8?

Progress 8 measures how much progress pupils make between the end of primary school and their GCSEs across eight subjects, compared with pupils nationally who had similar Key Stage 2 results. A score of 0 is average; +0.5 means pupils achieved half a grade higher than expected in every subject.

Why do most independent schools have no score?

Independent schools are not required to publish Key Stage results in the government tables, so they usually have no attainment data to score. They are still listed with their register details.

Does a high ranking mean a school is better?

It means the school's published results and intake measures are strong. Visit the schools on your shortlist, read the latest Ofsted report and ask how they support children at your child's level.
