How the CBSE school directory works

A transparent, reproducible way to compare every Indian school using only official data. No surveys, no paid placements, no black box.

Data sources

India publishes no school-level examination results, so no results ranking is possible. This section is a complete directory of every school affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, the national board whose curriculum most English-medium schools follow, with the affiliation level, management, address, website, founding year and managing trust from the board's own register. Each profile is then matched to the Ministry of Education's UDISE+ school census, which adds the figures that matter when choosing a school: enrolment (boys and girls), teachers and the pupilโ€“teacher ratio, five-year enrolment trend, classes offered, medium of instruction, residential status, classrooms and facilities such as library, playground, ICT lab and internet. Use it to find and shortlist CBSE schools in your district and compare them side by side.

The current dataset covers 32,901 schools, of which 0 receive a score and 0 are ranked. Data was retrieved on 9 October 2026.

No ranking is published for India. The lists on this site are directories ordered alphabetically, with programme features from the official dataset.

The components

Each school is compared only with schools of the same type across India. For each component we convert the raw value to a percentile within that type, then combine the percentiles with these weights:

ComponentWeightRaw measureWhy it matters

Adjustments

  • Missing components are left out and the remaining weights are rescaled, so a school is never penalised for data that is not published for its type.
  • Small schools: components marked as size-sensitive are shrunk toward the median for schools under 300 students, and schools with fewer than 0 students are scored but not ranked.
  • Excluded types: are listed but not scored.
  • Required data: a school needs a published Students to be scored.

Bands and ranks

The combined score is placed on a 0โ€“100 scale and labelled by percentile within school type: Top 5%, Top 10%, Top 25%, Top 50% or Lower 50%. Ranks are computed nationally, within each state, always within school type.

Known limitations

  • Nothing on this site ranks Indian schools by results, because no board or ministry publishes school-level results. Lists are ordered by size, pupilโ€“teacher ratio, growth, founding year or name, each of which describes the school rather than its outcomes.
  • UDISE+ figures are matched to CBSE schools by name and pin code; a small share of schools cannot be matched and show the CBSE register fields only. UDISE+ data is self-reported by schools in the annual census.
  • Only CBSE-affiliated schools are profiled. Schools affiliated to CISCE (ICSE and ISC), state boards and international boards are not yet included.
  • The directory comes from the CBSE affiliation register and reflects affiliation status, not inspection or quality findings.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CBSE school directory a measure of school quality?

No. It summarises published data about a school community and, where available, attainment. These correlate with academic results but do not measure teaching quality, wellbeing or culture.

Why are small schools not ranked?

Schools with fewer than 0 students have growth and attainment figures that swing dramatically with a handful of enrolments. They receive a score on their profile page but are excluded from ranking tables.

How often is it updated?

Automatically whenever the source agencies publish new data, plus whenever we improve the methodology. The data year (2026) is shown on every page.

Can a school pay to improve its ranking?

No. Success Tutoring accepts no payment from schools, and the index is computed mechanically from official data by open-source code.
