United States school rankings 2025
Top 100 lists for every state and category, ranked by the Success Index (US). Every list is built from the same official data and the same transparent formula.
How to use these rankings
Read this before you shortlist.
The US Success Index covers every regular public and charter school in the NCES Common Core of Data. It combines state-assessment proficiency in reading and math (EDFacts, all students), the share of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch as a measure of community advantage, and the student–teacher ratio. Each component is a percentile against schools of the same level (elementary, middle, high) across the whole country; state and district ranks are shown on every profile.
- States set their own assessments and proficiency cut scores, so proficiency rates are most comparable within a state. Use the state rankings for like-for-like comparisons.
- EDFacts reports proficiency in ranges for small schools; we use the midpoint, and schools with fewer than 30 tested students are excluded from results-based lists.
- Private schools are not covered by the Common Core of Data and are not listed.
